Technical Assistance on PCBs environmentally sound management and elimination

Enhancing capacities and accelerating action on PCBs elimination towards the 2025 and 2028 goals of the Stockholm Convention

Projects

The BRS Secretariat implements projects which aim to protect human health and the environment from the adverse effects of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) by strengthening national and regional capacities for the environmentally sound management of PCBs at the global scale to support Parties to meet the 2025 and 2028 goals on the elimination of PCBs of the Stockholm Convention.

These activities are developed in collaboration with Basel and Stockholm Regional Centres, the GEF implementing Agencies, UNEP´s chemicals and health branch, UNITAR, and other key partners.

Guidance documents and tools

Guidance documents have been developed under the Stockholm ad Basel conventions on all aspects related to the environmentally sound management of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), including identification and inventorying of PCBs, regulatory frameworks, handling, transport, storage and disposal, development of national strategies and phaseout plans as well as advice on potential funding mechanisms for PCBs elimination.

Training platform

UNITAR has developed an e-learning platform on polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) aiming to provide useful training materials related to different aspects of the management of PCBs.

Capacity building activities

The BRS Secretariat organizes and participates in training and awareness raising activities on the environmentally sound management of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to strengthen national and regional capacities to accelerate action towards meeting the 2025 and 2028 goals on the elimination of PCBs of the Stockholm Convention.
