At its fourth meeting, held in May 2009, the Conference of the Parties decided to amend Annex B of the Convention to list perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), its salts and perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride (PFOS-F).
In light of this amendment and in response to the needs expressed by Parties, the POPs Review Committee has established an intersessional working group to develop guidance on alternatives to PFOS and its derivatives. The outline of the guidance was agreed at the fifth meeting of the Committee in October 2009 and is contained in annex V to the report of the meeting (UNEP/POPS/POPRC.5/10).
In accordance with the workplan agreed in decision POPRC-5/2, the intersessional working group has developed a draft guidance document on Alternatives to perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and its derivatives.
A letter inviting review and submission of technical comments, as well as the draft guidance document were sent from the Secretariat to the Official Contact Points and National Focal Points.
