First Workshop of the nominated Stockholm Convention centres
Geneva, Switzerland, 17 - 19 June 2008
The meeting discussed issues related to the roles of regional centers in the provision of technical assistance, achieving synergies with related conventions, analysis of the National Implementation Plans, effectiveness evaluation, national reporting and other convention issues that require regional approach for implementation.
The meeting also started the discussions on the possible role of regional centers in the implementation of the clearing-house mechanism for information exchange on POPs.

A regional consultation workshop to identify regional needs for the
implementation of the Stockholm Convention was held at BCRC China,
a nominated Stockholm Convention centre, on 7th November 2008
BCRC China, a nominated Stockholm Convention centre organized a Consultation Workshop on Regional Needs for the implementation of the Stockholm Convention in the Asia-Pacific Region on 7 November 2008, in Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.
The workshop was attended by the Official Contact Points to the Stockholm Convention from China, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines and Sri Lanka. A representative from the Secretariat of the Basel Convention also attended the workshop as an observer.
Professor Li Jinhui, the executive secretary of BCRC China, made a presentation on the history, framework and activities of BCRC China, as well as the work plan which was developed and submitted to Secretariat of Stockholm Convention on September 2008 by BCRC China. Convention implementation needs of each participating country were reported and discussed. Participants to the workshop provided important suggestions for updating the work plan of the centre. Suggestions received during the workshop will help the development of regional project proposals.

Regional capacity-building workshop on the guidelines on BAT and BEP

The regional capacity building workshop on implementation of Article 5 and use of the guidelines on BAT&BEP was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil on 2-4 February 2009. The workshop aims at raising awareness and sharing experience between officials of the region regarding the implementation of Article 5 under the Convention (unintentional production of POPs) in particular in using the guidelines on BAT&BEP.

Second workshop for the Stockholm Convention Regional and Subregional Centres

The Second Workshop of the Regional and Subregional Centres for capacity-building and the transfer of technologies was held from 28 September to 2 October 2009, in Geneva, Switzerland. In addition to the follow up of the COP 4 decisions particularly on the technical assistance and capacity building, it also comprised the training activities for the experts in order to provide orientation in a way that they could expand the reach of the Secretariat at national and regional level.

Technical and practical training course for enhanced response to the accidental releases of hazardou
São Paulo, Brazil, 26 - 29 April 2010
The training course, funded through the Regional Centre - Small Grant Programme for 2009, was conducted by CETESB, the Stockholm Regional Centre in Sao Paulo, Brazil, from 26 April to 29 April 2010. A total of 31 participants from Brasil, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Panama, Peru and Uruguay participated in the training course. As outcome, participants plan to develop emergency action plans to be included in their respective national implementation plans.

Regional capacity-building workshop on new POPs and the process for reviewing and updating NIPs

The Stockholm Convention Regional Capacity Building Workshop on New POPs and the Process of Reviewing and Updating NIPs for the French-speaking African Region was held in Algiers, Algeria from 10 to 13 May 2010. It was organized and funded by the Secretariat of the Stockholm Convention and the National Centre for Cleaner Technologies Production (NCCTP) as part of the Small Grand Programme (SGP). It was the first activity in the Action Programme of the Regional Centre in Algeria directed towards those countries in the region, which are Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Mauritania, Algeria, Niger and Mali.

Third workshop of the Stockholm Convention Regional Centres and Joint Consultations
Barcelona, Spain, 27 September - 1 October 2010
Joint Consultation of Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions with the Basel and Stockholm Convention Regional Centres and FAO and UNEP Regional Offices was held from 27 September to 1 October 2010 in Barcelona City, Spain. The workshop, which was co-organised with Basel and Rotterdam Convention Secretariats and hosted by the Cleaner Production Regional Activity Centre (CP-RAC), a Stockholm Convention Regional Centre, targetted regional partners involved in assisting Parties in the implementation of the three Conventions in their respective regions. The workshop aimed at enhancing cooperation and collaboration among the regional centres, FAO regional and subregional officers, UNEP regional offices in their role of providing technical assistance and capacity building to the parties and the assessment of the progress made by the centres in implementing the activities of their work plans was made during the workshop.

The training programme on Capacity building for environmentally sound management of PCB oil and PCBs containing equipments will be held from 21 to 29 November 2011 at Ship Breaking Yard in Alang, Gujarat, India. It will target officials who are directly or indirectly involved in the handling and disposal of PCBs or PCBs containing equipments. The training programme is organized by the CSIR- National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI), a Stockholm Convention regional centre for Asia.

Alternatives Identification and Assessment Training

As part of the Programme of Work of the CPRAC in its activity 5.1.13 “Promotion and diffusion of Alternative Products and Processes to reduce the use of POPs and other chemicals” the CP/RAC is organizing the “Alternatives Identification and Assessment Training” which will be held on 13th December in Barcelona.
The training is organized under the EU Life Project SUBSPORT and intends to provide authorities, industry, trade unions, NGOs and other interested parties with information and tools to facilitate the substitution of hazardous chemicals in products and processes with safer alternatives.

Regional technical workshop on Environmentally Sound Management of E-waste
Teheran, Iran, 8 - 11 January 2012
The Basel and Stockholm Convention Regional Center in Tehran (BCRC & SCRC–Tehran) with the support of Department of Environment of Islamic Republic of Iran have the honor to hold simultaneously the Regional Technical Workshop on “Environmentally Sound Management of E-waste”, National Training Workshops on Environmentally Sound Management of Medical Waste, Industrial Waste, Agricultural Waste and Municipal Waste, and The 1st International Exhibition on “Waste Management, Recycling and Biomass” in Tehran, International Exhibition Center, on 8-11 January, 2012. This event will be held back-to-back with Regional Workshops on “Co-processing of Hazardous Wastes in Cement Kilns” and “Landfill Management” according to the role of the Center for awareness raising and technology transfer for ESM of hazardous wastes and chemicals.
This internationally recognized event brings attention to an ever-increasing need to tackle wastes and make the management of it more sustainable and efficient. The exhibition and workshops provide a unique opportunity to share new methods, technologies, best practices, and future directions on waste management, recycling and biomass. Leading machinery manufactures, multinational companies, besides government officials, researchers, educators, consultants, managers, community leaders and others from all over the world meet to present in this event and discuss topics related to all aspects of waste, recycling, and biomass technology and management.
It is expected that more than 100 exhibitors from Iran and about 30 different countries will participate in the event.
