Highlights
The fifteenth meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC-15) was held from 1 to 4 October 2019 at the FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy. POPRC-15 was organized back-to-back with the fifteenth meeting of the Chemical Review Committee of the Rotterdam Convention, convening at the same venue from 8 to 10 October 2019.
At its fifteenth meeting, the Committee adopted the risk management evaluation on perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), its salts and PFHxS-related compounds and recommended to the Conference of the Parties that it consider listing the chemicals in Annex A to the Convention without specific exemptions. The Committee also agreed that Dechlorane Plus and Methoxychlor met the screening criteria in Annex D moving those chemicals to the next review stage requiring a draft risk profile, that includes information requirements as specified in Annex E to the Convention, to be prepared by intersessional working groups established for this purpose.
The Committee also agreed to establish intersessional working groups on decabromodiphenyl ether and on short-chain chlorinated paraffins to undertake the activities specified in paragraph 5 of decisions SC-8/13 and SC-8/14, on review of information related to specific exemptions for these chemicals, and adopted the workplans for the intersessional period between the fifteenth and sixteenth meetings of the Committee.
The Committee’s sixteenth meeting is scheduled to take place from 14 to 18 September 2020 (the exact duration of the meeting is to be determined).
