At its seventeenth meeting, by its decision POPRC-17/1, the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee adopted a risk management evaluation on methoxychlor on the basis of the draft contained in the note by the Secretariat (UNEP/POPS/POPRC.17/2), as revised during the meeting. The text of the risk management evaluation as adopted is set out in the annex to the present addendum. It has not been formally edited.

1. The seventeenth meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee will be held at the Geneva International Conference Centre, 17 rue de Varembé, Geneva, from 24 to 28 January 2022. Taking into account the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic and related measures in Switzerland, participants who cannot attend the meeting in person can participate remotely through an online platform.

1. At its sixteenth meeting, the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee adopted decision POPRC-16/2 on methoxychlor (see UNEP/POPS/POPRC.16/9, annex I). In paragraph 3 of that decision, the Committee decided to establish an intersessional working group to prepare a risk management evaluation that included an analysis of possible control measures for methoxychlor in accordance with Annex F to the Convention.

At its sixteenth meeting, the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee adopted decision POPRC 16/1 on Dechlorane Plus (UNEP/POPS/POPRC.16/9, annex I), by which the Committee decided to defer its decision on the draft risk profile for Dechlorane Plus (UNEP/POPS/POPRC.16/INF/19) to the seventeenth meeting of the Committee, and noted that, while information on persistence, bioaccumulation and the potential for long-range environmental transport was conclusive, the Committee was unable to agree that the information on adverse effects was sufficient to reach a conclusion on the risk profile for Dechlorane Plus. In the same decision, the Committee decided, in accordance with Annex E to the Convention, to establish an intersessional working group to review and update the draft risk profile on Dechlorane Plus.

1. Paragraph 5 of part III of Annex B to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants provides that the Conference of the Parties is to evaluate the continued need for perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), its salts and perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride (PFOSF) for the various acceptable purposes and specific exemptions listed in Annex B on the basis of available scientific, technical, environmental and economic information. According to paragraph 6 of part III of Annex B, the evaluation is to take place no later than in 2015 and every four years thereafter, in conjunction with a regular meeting of the Conference of the Parties.

1. At its ninth meeting, in its decision SC-9/12, the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants decided to amend Annex A to the Convention to list perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), its salts and PFOA-related compounds therein. At the same meeting, the Conference of the Parties adopted decision SC 9/13, on actions related to PFOA, its salts and PFOA related compounds.

1. At the sixteenth meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee, during its consideration of the proposal to list UV-328 in Annexes A, B and/or C to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, several members stressed the importance of the Committee’s continuing to evaluate each chemical on a case-by-case basis and avoiding the setting of a precedent with regard to transport via plastic debris and microplastics. It was proposed that the Committee establish an intersessional working group to prepare draft guidance for the Committee on its consideration of long-range environmental transport, to aid members in their future evaluations of proposals for listing chemicals in the context of Article 8 of the Convention.

In accordance with paragraph 28 of its terms of reference, the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee prepares, for each of its meetings, risk profiles and risk management evaluations as required by Article 8 of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.
