Background
The addition of eleven new Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) to the Stockholm Convention in 2009, 2011 and 2013 brought a number of new challenges to Parties in their efforts to reduce or eliminate releases from intentional production and use of these POPs. Among these issues are the identification and sound management of industrial POPs that have been integrated into articles and products throughout their life-cycle.
In addition, several Parties have expressed that one of the challenges faced is the lack of information on the use and presence of new POPs in supply chains, production, recycling processes, as well as in waste streams.
Objectives
The objective of this side event is to share the latest knowledge on the sound management of articles containing POPs and on phasing-out the use and production of POPs subject to specific exemptions or acceptable purposes, sharing information on alternatives and substitutes readily available. The side event will provide opportunities to:
Share the outcome of research activities being undertaken and promote the continuous exchange of information.
Disseminate experiences and practical successful cases related to POPs in articles, alternatives, substitutes and POPs-free situations.
Invite POPRC participants to actively contribute to the activities.
